Tree pruning is a horticultural practice where you selectively remove certain parts of a tree, such as branches, buds and roots. There are several pruning techniques as well.
Cleaning- Removing dead, dying, diseased-ridden, weakly joined, and low-strength branches from the crown of the tree.
Thinning- Selective branch removal to improve the tree structure and to increase light penetration and air movement throughout the crown. Correct thinning opens up the foliage of a tree, lessens the weight on more substantial limbs, and helps keep the tree’s natural shape.
Raising- Removes lower branches from a tree to allow clearance for buildings, vehicles, and people.
Reduction- Reduces the size of a tree, usually for utility line clearance. Reducing a tree’s height or spread is generally done by pruning back the tree leaders, and branch ends to secondary branches that are sufficiently large enough to take over the terminal roles. In comparison to topping, reduction helps keep the form and structural durability of the tree.
Pruning and trimming- Essential landscaping techniques that keep your yard gorgeous year-round.

Tree removal is a complete removal, such as cutting a tree to the ground; or taking any action that would lead to the death of a tree or cause permanent damage that may compromise tree health and stability.
Tree Takedown with Stump Cut Low- This would consist of a full take down of the said tree and leaving the stump cut as low as reasonably possible without damage to our equipment. This would include the logs and chips removed from the premises unless other instructions are noted on the proposal.
Tree Takedown with Stump Grinding- Same as above except in this case the stump of the tree will be grinded approximately to surface level. Surface roots within 3ft of the stump will also be grinded. All grinds will be backfilled into the hole where the stump used to be. There may be a mound of chips depending on the size of the stump.
All Wood to Remain on Premises- When this is requested, all of the larger tree sections will be left on site in uncut lengths. We still assume to haul and dispose of the wood chips from the job unless it is noted on the proposal.
Logs to be Cut to Firewood Length- When the customer opts for wood to be cut into firewood lengths, the logs will be cut into approximately 18” pieces. They will still be in round form. This does not mean split and fireplace ready. You will still have to split and season the wood.

Grinding a stump is quick and efficient. It often takes only half an hour to two hours — typically a faster solution than removing the stump entirely.
Grinding does leave you with a pile of chips or sawdust — which, though they require some time for a quick cleanup, are well worth the effort because you can use them for other purposes around your home and yard.
Grinding a stump is usually cheaper than removing it. The reason is that complete removal is a much more labor-intensive and time-consuming process and requires heavy-duty machines with greater power demands. Many people would rather go with the more economical option and use the savings for other projects. Grinding is probably the best stump removal method for the money.

Cabling a tree involves bracing weaker or poorly positioned branches to the trunk or a larger branch via cables or rods. The cable is durable but flexible enough to allow the branch to grow.
The cables help bind the branches to a different base and stay on the tree if they don’t pose any danger.
Cabling can also add a degree of structural support for the trunk to encourage growing longer, more dense foliage. This can have a positive effect on the tree’s overall appearance
If you notice a weak spot in your tree or a part of the trunk or branch that is starting to split, contact us immediately.
Tree cabling is most effective when performed as soon as the first warning signs show.
"Yeah, we would give them ten stars, too. They have been coming here for years after another tree service did a bad job on the trees. Now they take care of our huge Valley Oaks, Cedars, and Bays. We've lived here for over 50 years, and they have never looked as good."
Tomahawk J | Alameda, CA
"Arborland's prices are fair, not on the low end or the high end, it's fair. Nelzon has great response and call back time, and an amazing hardworking crew. This is a family and locally run business, support them. Honesty, gets the job done and cares about the crew and their safety and leaves me feeling safer in the end."
Chris O | Oakland, CA
"Nelzon and his crew did a great job in pruning our large 50 foot valley oak that is in our backyard that hangs over some of our home. This was a challenging job due to overhanging branches over the building. They rose the canopy, removed dead wood, thinned out and removed larger limbs to reduce weight on heavy limbs. Protected all areas and cleaned up as if they were never there. Excellent arborists."
Bob G | Orinda, CA
"Nelzon is punctual, always on time and returns calls the same day. He is extremely professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and experienced. They showed up right on time the day that they were scheduled. The crew got to work right away. They worked efficiently"
